Castle Rockbackyards withless lawn.

Castle Rock sits near 6,224 feet and runs its own building division, separate from Douglas County's. It also limits how much grass newer homes can have, and its water utility credits some hardscape when lawn comes out. Both change how a backyard patio gets planned here.

Newer homes get less lawn

Castle Rock's ColoradoScape ordinance applies to homes permitted after 1 January 2023: no grass in the front yard and no more than 500 square feet of irrigated grass in the back. The Town describes ColoradoScape as drought-resistant planting combined with hardscape. If your home falls under it, everything past that 500 square feet is planting, rock or hard surface, so the patio gets planned alongside the planting rather than squeezed in later. Existing homes are not covered by the limit.

Replacing grass? Apply before the tear-out

Castle Rock Water's ColoradoScape renovation rebate pays $3.25 a square foot for lawn replaced with low-water planting and $1.00 a square foot for concrete or other non-permeable surface, up to 1,500 square feet per account. The design cannot be hardscape alone, an approved application and a site visit are required before work starts, and artificial turf earns nothing. The 2026 program is closed; the utility says 2027 details come in April 2027. If the rebate matters to you, get approved before the old patio or lawn comes out.

Town permit or Douglas County permit?

A Castle Rock address does not guarantee the Town is your permitting authority. The Town asks owners to look the parcel up on Douglas County's map site and confirm the Town of Castle Rock is listed as the building permit authority; if it is not, Douglas County handles the permit. A ground-level patio is rarely the question. A covered patio or a roofed pergola is, and Apex settles who reviews it before quoting.

Common Questions

Does the Castle Rock lawn limit apply to my house?

Only if the home was permitted after 1 January 2023. Those homes cannot have grass in the front yard and are limited to 500 square feet of irrigated grass in the back. Older homes are not restricted, though Castle Rock Water offers a rebate to owners who choose to convert.

Will Castle Rock Water help pay for a patio that replaces lawn?

Partly. Under the ColoradoScape renovation rebate, concrete and other non-permeable surfaces earn $1.00 a square foot, but only as part of a design that also includes plants, and only with an approved application and site visit before work begins. The rebate is capped at 1,500 square feet per account. The 2026 program is closed; 2027 terms are expected in April 2027.

Is my property under the Town of Castle Rock or Douglas County for permits?

Look up the parcel on Douglas County's map site and check the building permit authority in the account summary; that is the check the Town itself recommends. If the Town is not listed, the permit goes through Douglas County. Apex confirms this before quoting any covered patio or pergola.
